Welcome to the Department of Child Health at the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine! The Health Sciences Center and Children’s Hospital are on the campus of Mizzou, the oldest Land Grant University west of the Mississippi River. The institution has approximately 25,000 students and strong programs at both the undergraduate and graduate student levels including medical, nursing, and veterinary schools. The mission of the Department of Child
Health is to train superior physicians, foster
innovation through the sciences of discovery and application, and
provide health care of the highest quality in the context of
increasingly value-driven markets.
The vision is to be a leading resource in child health to
the citizens of Missouri, and to achieve national prominence in
pediatric education and research. In 2004, the department will be celebrating 50 years of making a difference in the lives of infants, children, and adolescents. We believe that the 21st century pediatrician must be an informed and passionate health professional that partners with families, and participates in team care that is patient-centered and culturally-effective; 21st century pediatricians must have progressive attitudes and values that bring balance to their own lives. The faculty members and staff of the Department and Children’s Hospital are excited and proud about serving children and families today with comprehensive high quality services and tomorrow with cutting edge educational and research programs. Columbia is located mid-state, about 120 miles from Kansas City to the west and St. Louis to the east. The town has a population of approximately 80,000 and is invariably found on published lists of "the best places to live." The area boasts numerous cultural and recreational opportunities.
